The college roommate problem deserves better tools.
Crashmates exists because the existing options — Roomster, Bunky, Facebook groups, Craigslist — are either subscription-trap apps full of bots or unverified marketplaces where students get scammed. We built the only roommate platform that verifies every user against the federal IPEDS database before they can post or message.
The problem.
Every August, millions of college students try to find roommates and housing. Their options are:
- Roomster — unverified, $30/month subscription required to message anyone, profile feeds full of bots and scammers operating outside the US.
- Bunky — unverified, no .edu requirement, no housing listings, profiles often don’t belong to actual students.
- Facebook campus groups — dominated by property managers and brokers, real students drowned out, no compatibility filtering.
- Craigslist — privacy nightmare, no identity verification, prime hunting ground for housing scammers.
- School housing portals — dorm-focused, don’t cover off-campus, often gated to current students only.
None of these were built to actually solve the problem. They were built to maximize ad views, subscription renewals, or property listings.
The approach.
Crashmates flips the model. Three differences:
- Verify at the door, not at checkout. Every account is verified through a .edu email cross-checked against the federal IPEDS database — the official list of accredited US colleges. If you’re not a current student, you don’t get in. Verification takes 30 seconds and happens before you can post or message.
- Credits, not subscriptions. Browsing, matching, and receiving messages are free forever. The only thing that costs is sending the first message in a new conversation — one credit ($1, or $0.70 in bulk). No auto-renewals. No surprise charges.
- Match by compatibility, not by who paid more. Our matching uses eight lifestyle dimensions (sleep, cleanliness, social vibe, smoking, guests, pets, budget, move-in date) plus your school and neighborhood preferences. No boosted profiles, no pay-to-play visibility.
Who we serve.
Every student at every accredited US college. We launched with 3,900+ live campuses including UCLA, UC Berkeley, NYU, UT Austin, Michigan, and Harvard — and we cover all ~2,500 IPEDS-listed schools. As students from new campuses sign up, their school’s community activates automatically.
Common Crashmates use cases:
- Freshmen looking for a roommate before move-in
- Transfer students who need housing and a community fast
- Off-campus apartment hunters looking for compatible co-renters
- Summer subleases when going home or studying abroad
- Lease takeovers when graduating mid-cycle or transferring
