Credits, not subscriptions

Free to browse. Free to match.

Most roommate apps charge $20-30/month to message anyone. Crashmates is free until you send the first message in a new conversation — that’s when one credit gets used. After that, the whole conversation is free forever, for both people.

Credits never expire. Buy them once, use them whenever. Receiving messages is always free — if someone messages you first, you can reply for free for the entire conversation.

Only when you send the first message in a brand new conversation — one credit, that’s it. Replies and follow-ups are unlimited.

Why not subscriptions?

Roomster charges $30/month. Bunky charges $20/month. Most roommate apps lock the most important feature — messaging — behind a recurring subscription that auto-renews until you remember to cancel.

That model works for those apps because anyone with an email can join. They need recurring revenue to filter bots and scammers. Crashmates filters at the front door instead — every account is verified through a .edu address cross-checked against the federal IPEDS database before they can post or message.

Because we verify upfront, we don’t need a subscription to make the platform safe. We charge a tiny per-first-message fee that prevents spam without locking real students out of the people they want to meet.

Pricing FAQ.

What are credits used for?
One credit lets you send the first message in a new conversation. After the first message, the entire conversation is free for both people, forever. Receiving messages is always free.
Is there a subscription?
No. Crashmates is intentionally not a subscription. You buy credits once, they sit in your account until you use them, and they never auto-renew.
Do credits expire?
No. Once you buy them, they’re yours until you spend them. We don’t expire credits to force you to keep buying.
What’s free?
Browsing every verified student profile at your school, getting matched, receiving messages, posting subleases and lease takeovers, viewing room listings, and using compatibility scoring — all free forever.
Can I get a refund?
Unused credits are refundable within 30 days of purchase. Once you’ve used a credit, that one is non-refundable. Email support@crashmates.com to request a refund.
Why do you charge for first messages?
Free messaging gets spammed. Roomster and Bunky charge subscriptions because anyone can join — they need recurring revenue to filter bots. Crashmates verifies every .edu, so we don’t need a subscription. A small per-first-message cost keeps spam down without locking real students out.
Is there a free trial?
The whole platform is effectively free until you want to message someone. Browse, match, view profiles, get likes — all without paying.
Can I gift credits to a friend?
Not yet. We’re working on it. For now, you can buy them and share your login — but that’s technically against the Terms, so don’t.
